LHS Brand Photography

Photography-wise, I always have the most fun in a brand session. Not only does a brand session require you to make creative use of a set of client-provided items and locations, its success depends on how well you can put yourself in someone else’s shoes and get to know their personality, taste, and needs…and even anticipate some needs or preferences that might not have occurred to them in the moment. You know, those great lightbulb moments when “shall we try this?” is answered with “wait - YES!”

Below: a modest sampling of favorite shots from a recent brand photography session for Lauren Haley Studios in Sugar Land, TX.

On a rainy spring day this year, I passed through Wales and stopped at Cardiff Violins’ shop in Castle Arcade with a group of friends. It was beautiful, atmospheric, and felt like it had fallen a little outside the normal passage of time. In the best of ways.

The Photogenic Violin

Sometimes I get asked to shoot objects that are so photogenic that frankly a potato could do the job, and the violin is one of those glorious objects. They look great foreshortened, from the side, from above, and even in an angled detail shot with super shallow depth of field.

I think it's the beautiful, warm toned wood grain that does it -- that, plus the thin lines of string that draw the eye forward, the bottom-heavy pear shape, and the opposing curves formed by the side grooves and f-holes. Throw in an Essex piano as a backdrop, add some sheet music and roses for texture, and bam - instant website heading material.

Thanks to Lauren Haley Studios of Sugar Land, TX, for trusting me work to with this lovely thing, & for continuing to feature my work on the site.
